"Everybody proudly posed July 4, 1895, when the narrow-gauge (3-foot 6-inch) Oakland, San Leandro and Haywards Electric introduced piggyback service on the 20 mile...run. Once the horses were unhitched, express wagons were winched aboard the 4 wheel flats by a cable off the locomotive. Service lasted until lane was standard gauged in 1906." |
